Working at a Mobile Cart

Postural variation is critical for maintaining long term comfort and health. Recent ergonomics research suggests that alternating between sitting and standing affords a variety of health benefits ranging from improved circulation, improved cardiovascular health and even weight loss.

These guidelines for working at a mobile cart will maximize your comfort while sitting or standing.

When Standing

  • Adjust your work tools to allow yourself to stand
  • Position the articulating keyboard support about an inch below your rested elbow height such that your shoulders are relaxed.

When Sitting

  • Adjust the height of your chair so that your thighs are parallel to the floor and your feet are flat and supported
  • Lean back and allow the chair to support the weight of your upper body
  • Position the articulating keyboard support about 1 to 1.5 inches above your thighs, relax your shoulders and position your elbows at your side

When Standing or Sitting

  • Angle the keyboard away from your body to straighten your wrists while typing
  • Position your mouse close to the keyboard to minimize reaching
  • Position the monitor about an arm’s length away from your body with the top line of text at or slightly below eye level
  • Tilt the monitor slightly away from you so your natural -150 downward viewing gaze is about perpendicular to the monitor
  • Align the center of your monitor with the keyboard space bar and the midline of your body to minimize neck and trunk rotation

To Move
  • Push the cart with arms placed close to your body. Do not pull the cart. Pushing utilizes your own body weight, requires less effort to sustain and is therefore preferred
